Sahara Slate PC i500 Tablet PCs : Replacing i500's HD with an SSD

    Author: dting22
Subject: Replacing i500's HD with an SSD
Posted: 05/01/12 at 7:12pm

I'm posting this because it may help others who are attempting to replace their i500's 320GB or 500GB hard disk with an SSD.

Justupgraded from an i440D to an i500 with 8GB RAM, capacitive touch screen, Win7Ultimate. It is truly the mother of all tablets -- fast, expandable (lotsof user-upgradable parts and easy access hatches). Easy to carry. Screen isbeautiful; a bit wider horizontally and narrower vertically than the i440D screen, but brighter, andhigher resolution. Multi-touch is responsive and quick. And I appreciatebeing able to turn off the capacitive touch with a button, so I can use the stylusfor serious precision work (like Photoshop) -- a feature lacking in just about every consumer-grade tablet out there. I also appreciate the ability to hot-swap batteries, so I can run all day without plugging in to power. Nice job,TabletKiosk!Since SSD's are quite a bit moreexpensive than traditional hard drives, I suspect most users who opt to swap the stock i500 hard drive will be replacingthe drives with SSDs that are smaller than the 500GB stock drive. That presents aproblem if you plan to copy the factory disk image onto your new SSD, because Windows 7 won't let you place a disk image from a largerdrive onto a smaller drive.<?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

I wanted to replace the stock Western Digital 500gb HDD with a 256gbOCZ Vertex 4 SSD. At first, I created a backup system image from the500gb and tried to restore it to the 256gb using a win7 repair CD. But Ireceived the error: "No disk that can be used for recovering thesystem disk can be found". Windows didn't want to put the imageof a 500gb disk on top of a 256gb disk (even though the actual space used onthe factory disc was less than 50GB).

Solution:

    0. If you don't already have one, create a Windows Repair CD for Win7 64-Bit.
    1. With the original 500gb in the i500, goto Control Panel -> Administrative tools -> Computer Management ->Disk Management
    2. Right-click over the primary partition on your C:drive, and select "shrink volume"
    3. Shrink the volume of the partition so that the TOTAL sizeof all partitions on Drive C: is less than the size of the SSD (in my case, 256GB).
    4. Now run Windows Backup and create a full system image ofthe original factory disk onto an external USB drive.

    5. Shut down the tablet, and swap out the old HD with your new SSD.
    5. Reboot the i500, pressing DEL at the white TabletKioskscreen, to access the BIOS. Go to BOOT and make sure the DVD ROM is thefirst boot device.
    6. Save & Exit the BIOS screen, ensuring the WindowsRepair CD is in the DVD drive, and that the drive is attached to the i500
    7. Boot from the Windows Repair CD and follow the directionsto restore your previously backed-up disk onto your SSD.
    8. After removing all external drives and rebooting thei500, go back into Disk Management and Expand the volume back to the full sizeof your SSD.

Nowmarvel as the Windows Experience Index for your drive goes from 5.9 to 7.6!

Unfortunately, I have nothing yet to report. The current hold up is not hardware related, but rather software.

We ended up changing developers mid stream because our original developers decided they could deliver the functionality we requested. Hopefully our new developer will have something for us soon which will allow us to move into final production. At that point I should have a solid release date and pricing.

Right now, it is looking like late May or early June. I promise to post an update as soon as I have solid information.
I would be very interested in knowing more about this module when it comes out, and specifically what it looks like on the Sahara Slate and if it works with the Shoulder Strap case (both things are important to me since it would be a work AND play computer). Anyway there doesn't seem to be a good competitor for the i500 yet so I can probably wait for the module. If there is a list of people who will be contacted when it comes out I would like to be on that list. Might even order the computer if I had the promise it was coming soon and an idea of what it looked like. You guys are doing great work.
