Sahara Slate PC i400 Series : i440D: 1 year 3 failed batteries - Opinions please

    Author: keal
Subject: i440D: 1 year 3 failed batteries - Opinions please
Posted: 03/11/10 at 12:10pm

This is a history of my batteries, as I think there's a flaw in its design. Maybe some of you have similar issues and can shed some more info on this.

When we got our i440D tablets last year (2 of them) we got 4 batteries.

Here's how I use the batteries: I run a tablet on full power, and after about 100 minutes, the tablet gives me a low battery warning. I put the tablet into hibernation, swap the battery with a fresh one, then run it for an hour or so. I then place one battery in the standalone charger, and plug the tablet into an outlet to charge the inserted battery. The next day, I rotate the batteries with the ones I didn't use the day before, so all batteries are in rotation.

Here's the history of the 4 batteries:

Battery 1: The first week of use, it died instantly. It wouldn't charge to 100 percent. It would go to 99 percent, and I can't recall how much time I got from the battery, but in that first week, it stopped charging. It simply wouldn't charge at all. I put it away.

Battery 2: After six months of giving me a full 100 minutes use, it gave me only 5 minutes of use. Overnight, it went from 100 minutes of use to 5 minutes. I put it away.

Battery 3: After nearly one year of a full 100 minutes use, it gives me 55 minutes of use. Overnight, it went from 100 minutes of use to 55 minutes. I'm still using it.

Battery 4: After nearly one year of use, it's still giving me a full 100 minutes of use. I'm still using it.

One thing to note is, just before a battery fails on me, I don't get a 'low battery' warning in Windows. The tablet will just shut down. When I swap the batteries and turn the tablet back on, it gives the 'computer has been shut down improperly' notice. All the batteries that failed did that same thing in the end.

If it were the power cells, I would think the battery would slowly lose its charging capacity. My guess is it's the built-in circuitry that regulates the charging/discharging is either going bad, or has detached from the power cells (in the case of my first battery not really working from the beginning).

Anyone have similar issues? I'm going to be buying a couple new batteries for my i440D soon, and I'm thinking I'm going to have the same issues with this first set of batteries.

Edited by keal - Yesterday at 8:16am

The i412T and i440T only have resistive touch screens. Except with newer controllers and software specifically written for them (such as the PenMount 6000 series controller on the Sahara NetSlate a230T) these type of screens do not provide the functionality in Windows 7 you were hoping for.

The Windows 7 features you would like to have were purposed by Microsoft to work with capacitive touch screens, not resistive touch screens. Resistive touch screens were created to emulate the function of a mouse, but with a finger or stylus.

Some of the functionality you are probably looking to have can be done with the i440D in digitizer mode, as Windows 7 natively supports these screens.

The type of work traditionally done on PCs with resistive touch screens are typically those such as applications for kiosks, registration, POS, control systems, etc. where mainly buttons presses are required, not multi-touch sensing input such as swiping and flicking.

As mentioned above, gestures are supported on the NetSlate with PenMount's custom drivers that are included on the device.

I apologize for any confusion or inconvenience this issue has caused you. I still think, regardless of the omission of these types of features, if you have application for a device with finger touch driven functions you'll find your Sahara Slate PC to be an excellent and reliable computing tool.

I hope this answers your question (although probably not the way you were hoping for). I'm sorry it took someone a few days to get back to you.
The touch screen drivers for the SG22 are "mouse" drivers-- as far as Windows is concerned, you're using a mouse.

They work fine, in that I can calibrate the screen, tap and double-tap (and tap and hold for right-click), just as you would with a mouse.

But a mouse isn't tablet input, and so I can't use gestures: no flicking web pages to scroll, for example.

That's the functionality I'd like to have.

The downloaded touch screen drivers work fine, but apparently they present the touch screen to Windows as an emulated mouse.
